More than 30 women came together for the quarterly 100+ Women Who Care meeting on Tuesday, July 11, at The Woodward Opera House. More than $8,300 has been awarded since the groups first meeting in October of 2022.

“Our goal is to become a group of over 100 women and we’re moving toward that. We are reimagining local giving through this giving circle,” explained founding member Marty Bell. “It’s powerful and educational. I’m learning about organizations and resources I didn’t even know existed in Knox County.”
The group learned about three Knox County nonprofit organizations that were nominated by the members for funding consideration. They included The Least of These, Eagles Nest from East Elementary and Centerburg Interchurch. After a membership vote, it was determined that The Least of These would receive this quarter’s funding of more than $3,400.

Represented by Amy McDougale, The Least of These began four years ago when McDougale and others, through a ministry at the Knox County Jail, realized that addiction is a huge problem for many women in our community. It also presents a special opportunity to minister to these women through providing a residential home, which has already been purchased but requires many updates and renovations. Funds from 100+ Women will assist them in providing safe housing, counseling, therapy, job assistance and more for up to eight women at one time in a 13-month program.
Event attendees also heard an update from April’s funding recipient, Giving Hope. The organization has been able to expand their WOW (Words On Wheels) book bus activities and are excited to serve more children and families with their annual Christmas shopping program for children in Knox County. Giving Hope was started by retired area bus drivers with a desire to create positive experiences for local children. Readers can learn more at givinghopecharity.org.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 10, in The Woodward Opera House, with social time at 6:15 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. “We quietly meet for one hour, put some cash in an envelope, and turn that into a huge impact for good in our communities,” said leadership team member Kim Weitkamp.
